good morning the reason i wanted to talk about how to format letters is that you will have an assignment at least one during english three in which you will be asked to write a professional business letter about a professional subject and i dont think thats a skill that a lot of people learn as theyre coming up through school so i wanted to go through how to put such a thing together and also give you some background about it so that you can get maximum points when you have to do one in here its kind of unfair to ask you to do something that you havent been taught how to do so i wanted to make sure that everybody had some good preparation about this so heres the thing who really writes letters anymore i mean we text we email we face time we do all these other things who actually sits down and writes a letter maybe over the holidays somebody makes you sit down and do a handwritten thank you note for a gift but very seldom do people actually really write letters anymore its one of

Most business letters must include a return address (letterhead or your name and address), date, an inside address (receivers name and address), a salutation, body paragraphs, and a closing.
Use 1-inch margins and 11- or 12-point font. Double-space between the date and the salutation. Double-space between each paragraph.
When you use the block form to write a business letter, all the information is typed flush left, with one-inch margins all around. First provide your own address, then skip a line and provide the date, then skip one more line and provide the inside address of the party to whom the letter is addressed.
The standard margins for a formal letter are one inch on all sides, but you can adjust them slightly if needed. The alignment for a formal letter is usually left-aligned, meaning the text is aligned with the left margin and has a ragged right edge.
Typically margins are about 1 inch (25.4 mm) on all sides of the document, which is the default setting for most word-processing programs.
1 Choose a template. The easiest way to format a business letter in Microsoft Word is to use a template that has the proper margins, fonts, and alignment. 2 Write the heading. 3 Write the salutation. 4 Write the body. 5 Write the closing. 6 Add your signature and enclosures. 7 Heres what else to consider.
When writing business letters, you must pay special attention to the format and font used. The most common layout of a business letter is known as block format. Using this format, the entire letter is left justified and single spaced except for a double space between paragraphs.
