[Music] Revocable Living Trust. One of the questions asked was do I recommend that for a single person. You know, depending on the situation Ill recommend it for a single person or for a married couple. Its all factually dependent on their assets, their Estate, what they want to accomplish, how complicated it is, how simple it is, but just dont buy from anybody that tells you that a Revocable Living Trust is the cats meow. Single guy, no kids, I mean I think literally 18 nieces and nephews and all he wanted in a very modest Estate like a bank account and the house and his Revocable Living Trust said everything goes to my favorite nephew. A living trust can help you manage and pass on a variety of assets. However, there are a few asset types that generally shouldnt go in a living trust, including retirement accounts, health savings accounts, life insurance policies, UTMA or UGMA accounts and vehicles.
Suze Orman, the popular financial guru, goes so far as to say that everyone needs a revocable living trust. But what everyone really needs is some good advice. Living trusts can be useful in limited circumstances, but most of us should sit down with an independent planner to decide whether a living trust is suitable.
Revocable living trusts have a few key benefits, like avoiding probate, privacy protection and protection in the case of incapacitation. However, revocable living trusts can be expensive, dont have direct tax benefits, and dont protect against creditors.
Staging the Inheritance Some estate plans release parts of an inheritance at different ages, like giving one-third at age 25, another third at age 30, and the final third at age 35 or 40. This method lets the inheritor mature in their financial management skills over time.
There is no Ideal Time to Consider a Living Trust Unfortunately, there is no real answer to the right time to create a living trust because it is not solely based on your age. Instead, wealthier people with expensive assets, regardless of age, should consider one of these documents.
Selecting an individual trustee Choosing a friend or family member to administer your trust has one definite benefit: That person is likely to have immediate appreciation of your financial philosophies and wishes. Theyll know you and your beneficiaries.
The most common type of trust for children under 18 years of age is a custodial account. Custodial accounts are governed under the Uniform Gift to Minors Act (UMGA) or the Uniform Transfer to Minors Act (UTMA). UGMA lets minors own securities while UTMA lets minors own other kinds of property including real estate.
The term trust fund baby has a negative connotation, as its associated with the stereotype of a spoiled individual who doesnt have to work. In reality, individuals with a trust, a trustor, often do work, and wont advertise that they have a trust fund.
