The USPS also offers a service called Media Mail that is designed specifically for shipping books, CDs, tapes, and other forms of media mail. Media Mail shipping costs depend on the weight of the package, with prices starting at $2.80 and delivery in 2-8 business days.
Postage is determined by package weight. A typical paperback (weighing up to one pound) costs $3.65 to send by MediaMail postal rate. A heavier book (a large hardcover, for example) weighing between 1 and 2 pounds will cost $4.35 to send by Media mail.
USPS Flat Rate Flat Rate envelopes are ideal for shipping single books, while medium and large Flat Rate boxes work very well for larger shipments.
For 1-2 books, a bubble mailer (with plastic lining inside) or small box can be used. Larger boxes will be needed for shipping multiple books at once. If you use a box, I recommend wrapping the books in bubble wrap and/or a plastic bag to prevent them from getting wet in the rain.
Media Mail is the most common way merchants ship books and other physical media items. With a weight limit of 70 lbs, it can ship a LOT of books for an affordable rate. It is an economical option that has long been available through the USPS. Media Mail is a slower service than First Class or Priority Mail.
UPS is often more expensive than USPS due to fees and surcharges, especially when it comes to shipping smaller packages. Generally, USPS offers much better rates when shipping smaller packages of less than two pounds. UPS typically is a better choice when shipping larger, heavier packages by offering superior value.
Certificate of Mailing service provides a postmarked mailing receipt as evidence that your item was mailed. This is all you need to do: Complete PS Form 3817 at the time of mailing.
