SMS is a stateless communication protocol in which every SMS message is considered entirely independent of other messages.
Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) is an Internet standard for electronic mail (e-mail) transmission across Internet Protocol (IP) networks. This is used for the email to SMS solution where a text message can be sent using an email client and converted into a text message by the FastSMS system.
After receiving your HTTP request, the SMS gateway will forward your SMS text message towards the recipient. The SMS gateway will then send back an HTTP response that contains a return value.
An SMS message is sent via a gateway directly to the cell phone carrier, while an SMTP message, like any other email, bounces from server to server (this can often happen a half-dozen times) before it arrives.
When you send an SMS message, the message gets transmitted from the sending device to the nearest cell tower. That cell tower passes the message to an SMS center (SMSC). Then the SMSC forwards the SMS message to a cell tower near the receiving device. Lastly, that tower sends the message to the recipients device.
Its a protocol used for sending short messages over wireless networks. Unlike many services in use today, such as MMS and other data-driven instant messaging services, SMS still works on the fundamental voice rather than the data part of the wireless network.
