T.38 lets one transmit a fax across an IP network in real time, just as the original G3 fax standards did for the traditional (time-division multiplexed (TDM)) network, also called the public switched telephone network or PSTN.
The T. 30 fax protocol was designed for use over analog phone lines (circuit-switched network). T. 38 is an ITU protocol that dictates how fax audio traverses a packet-switched network, such as the Internet or a companys LAN/WAN, reliably.
Traditional faxes utilize a PSTN, and so does G. 711. But this protocol converts those audio files into real-time transport protocol (RTP) packets, which is a process that enables those files to travel over an IP.
FoIP, also called IP faxing, is a method of sending faxes over the Internet. FoIP changes the transmission medium of faxing in much the same way that VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) changes the transmission medium of a phone call.
38-based fax call makes use of Transport Control Protocol (TCP)- and User Datagram Protocol (UDP)-based transport protocols to deliver packets on the Internet Protocol (IP) network [ITU-T-G. 711 (1988), ITU-T-T.
Faxes cant be sent over IP networks in the same way voice communications can, so the protocol is done in a way that makes that possible. T. 38 is typically used by a fax server instead of a machine. T.
T. 30 is an International Telecommunications Union (ITU) recommendation that defines the procedures for transmitting a document between two devices over the public switched telephone network (PSTN).
Traditional fax It transmits data in the form of pulses via a telephone line to a recipient, usually another fax machine, which then transforms these pulses into images, and prints them on paper. The traditional method requires a phone line, and only one fax can be sent or received at a time.
