Welcome everyone, this is Amer Mushtaq from You Counsel. Today, we will talk about performance improvement plans and what are employees rights when they are issued with the performance improvement plan. This question was asked of me a few times in the last month or so, and I thought it will be a good topic to cover in these lectures. Well begin with our usual disclaimer that this course is not legal advice, so, if you have any specific questions you must contact an employment lawyer. Performance improvement plan, what is it? You may have seen it in your work place, you may not have, but a performance improvement plan usually has a few components. Thank you for meeting with me and [name and role] on [date] to discuss my concerns about your performance and the proposal to put in place a Performance Improvement Plan (PIP) to support you to improve your performance to the standard required.
The PIP is always in writing so the expectations are clear, and it can also provide a warning to the employee that his or her employment is in jeopardy. The PIP should specify the job expectations that have not yet been met, or the job performance that needs to be improved.
A: A performance improvement plan (PIP) should almost never come as a surprise unless there was something you did that was so concerning and unexpected that a PIP needed to be developed quickly to address the concern. Typically a PIP is the step taken after there has been docHub counseling and coaching.
NEVER SIGN THE PIP UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES AND START LOOKING FOR ANOTHER JOB. Employers always demand that employees sign their performance improvement plans. We advise our clients not to sign them, so as to avoid any level of consent or acknowledgment to the bogus narrative strung through the PIP by the employer.
You will be asked to sign the PIP. Generally, your signature attests only that youve received the document, not that you agree with it. If you want to make that clear, you can add a note saying, signature to confirm receipt.
How to write a performance improvement plan Determine acceptable performance. Create measurable objectives. Define what support the employee will receive. Draw up a schedule for check-Ins. State the consequences of a lack of improvement.
Developing and writing a performance improvement plan is a straightforward process. Step 1: Identify if a PIP is needed. Step 2: Focus on behaviors. Step 3: Provide proof with specific examples. Step 4: List your expectations. Step 5: Offer resources. Step 6: Create a timeline. Step 7: Sign off on it.
You can challenge the Pip if you dont agree with it by lodging a formal grievance in ance with your organisations policy (it is usually lodged with your line manager or HR). You are often also entitled to appeal any disciplinary warning linked to the Pip by notifying your employer in writing of the same.
