All youre responsible for by the application deadline (for your recs section) is your recommenders names and their contact information. The recs themselves can be submitted after the application deadline.
The admission committees that Ive been part of generally dont care about the official deadline; however, if the letter or letters arent in by the time that theyre needed to evaluate a candidate then they obviously cant be used.
Due Dates. All letters of recommendation are due by the application deadline. Late submissions will not be considered and will disqualify you from the admissions cycle. So make sure your recommenders are aware of the application deadline!
Generally, a late recommendation wont kill your application. Schools dont read and act on applications the minute, or even day, of the deadline. Usually if letters get there before they start, or even partway though, processing the application, that is fine.
Along with a strong personal statement, letters of recommendation are crucial to the success of your application process. They are important pieces of the puzzle that help to create a full picture of who you are as a candidate, a student and a person.
Most graduate schools require 3 letters of recommendation. However, you should double-check how many each school requires, and do NOT send more than asked for. Sending too many letters or information not requested by the school, can actually HURT your candidacy.
You are allowed to submit your application before your counselor or teachers submit their school forms whether they choose to do so online or on paper. The Common Application system allows recommendations to be submitted even after the application has been submitted.
Communicate with your recommenders about your goals for graduate study, your career aspirations, and how you chose your schools and programs. Give your recommenders a copy of your transcript and CV or resume. This helps them gain a better understanding of your background and interests.
