The difference between certified mail and return receipt lies in delivery confirmation. Certified Mail is a USPS service providing the sender with an official receipt showing proof that an item was mailed. A Return Receipt may also be purchased, providing the sender with verification of delivery via email or postcard.
Certificate of Mailing service provides a postmarked mailing receipt as evidence that your item was mailed. This is all you need to do: Complete PS Form 3817 at the time of mailing.
You must visit any Post Office, station or branch, complete PS Form 3811-A, Request for Delivery Information/Return Receipt, and produce your receipt showing that the applicable return receipt fee was paid. This must be done within 90 days of the date of purchase.
Return Receipt provides the sender with proof of delivery (the recipients signature along with information about the delivery address, if different, and date of and time of delivery). A Return Receipt may be purchased at the time of mailing.
NOTE: The delivery record is not automatically mailed back to the sender with this service: Signature proof can be requested at the time of mailing by purchasing Return Receipt Service. Customers have the option of receiving the return receipt by mail or electronically.
Fill in the Certified Mail Receipt (Form PS 3800) and attach it to the front of your envelope. Then pay for the postage and Certified Mail fees at the counter. The clerk will stamp the PS 3800 form and give a portion back to you as Proof of Acceptance.
A Return Receipt provides evidence of delivery (to whom it was delivered and the date of delivery). You also receive the delivery address, if its different from the address on the mailpiece. You may choose to receive the Return Receipt electronically (a copy of the signature) or by mail (with an original signature).
Return Receipt (Electronic) currently cannot be purchased through USPS.com. It is available for purchase from Post Offices at the time of mailing. Electronic return receipts requested at the time of mailing are available individually online through USPS Tracking.
Certificate of Mailing service provides a postmarked mailing receipt as evidence that your item was mailed.
To request a POD letter: Go to USPS Tracking at tools.usps.com/go/TrackConfirmActioninput. Enter a valid tracking number. Select Proof of Delivery. Provide your contact information.
