I want to dive into the Microsoft Deferred Comp plan, and specifically the payout structure associated with the Deferred Comp, because I think its a little bit different than what most people are typically used to when it comes to retirement savings. What most people are used to is your typical 401K plan. So, with a 401K plan, as you know, you put money in and it becomes, essentially, a nest egg that grows over time. And then when you wanna take money out of the 401K, or out of an IRA, there is a lot of flexibility associated with that. The Deferred Comp plan is a little bit different. So, for each respective deferral that you make, so thats gonna be each respective years bonus and salary deferral, you have to make a decision as to how you want to receive those dollars and over what sort of a timeframe, and when that timeframe begins. So, as an example, lets just say that youre making a bonus deferral for 2021 and you expect

The journal entry is simple. Debit Deferred Compensation Liability for $100,000 (this will zero out the account balance), and credit Cash for $100,000. Taxes on the payment will be paid at this point (by both the corporation and the employee).
A bonus can be deferred for a maximum of three years. Since the employee is taxed only upon receiving the amount, the employer may only claim the deduction at that time. However, if the bonus is paid within 180 days following the end of the taxation year it is declared, it can be deducted in the year (see Section VI).

While bonuses are subject to income taxes, the IRS doesnt consider them regular wages. Instead, your bonus counts as supplemental wages and can be subject to different federal withholding rules.
