Documents Required When a Person Dies: Death Certificate: California law requires that every death be registered.
Payment: You can pay by cash, money order in the exact amount, personal check, or credit or debit card in your name. The cost for each birth certificate is $23. The cost for one death certificate is $21.
Youll usually need one certified copy (not a photocopy) for each insurance, bank or pension company youre dealing with. You may also need to give copies to the executor or administrator who is dealing with the property of the person whos died.
Contact the bereavement service to cancel the persons benefits and entitlements, including their State Pension. Theyll also check if youre eligible for help with funeral costs or other benefits. If they were living abroad when they died, contact the International Pension Centre instead.
What to do about their State Pension. If the person who died was getting a State Pension, you need to tell the Pension Service theyve died so that payments stop. Call the Pension Service helpline on 0800 731 0469.
General Information. It is a legal requirement that all deaths should be registered as soon as possible but preferably within 5 days (unless the death has been reported to the coroner).
