Hi everyone! Ulises here again for Ask Our Experts. Platform Firmware Security has been a hot topic recently, and wereexcited to bring in Brandon Weekly to answer yet another question on the topic. So, without any further ado, lets get into it! Brandon, attestation is a term frequently heard in discussions about platform security, but it seems as though it can apply to a single chip or a whole platform. How does this work? So, attestation is essentially a call andresponse routine, where an application processor inside of a platform will send a message to one of its components asking, effectively, who are you and what are you doing? And then that component has to answer using an encrypted message, or using adigital signature saying its identity, and then what activity its engaged in. This signature is created using asymmetric encryption algorithm, so itsnot something that can be faked. So, once the application processor receivesthat response, it will know whet

TPM key attestation is the ability of the entity requesting a certificate to cryptographically prove to a CA that the RSA key in the certificate request is protected by either a or the TPM that the CA trusts.
It allows app developers to evaluate the security of their apps and is applicable for Android and iOS. It becomes an important part of a companys abuse detection system wherein your security experts can check if your servers are indeed interacting with genuine applications.
Secure Attestation, which is a Secure Vault feature, begins with a secure identity that is created during manufacture at Silicon Labs. The chip itself creates a public/private key pair on the die during final testing.
During key attestation, you specify the alias of a key pair. The attestation tool, in return, provides a certificate chain, which you can use to verify the properties of that key pair.
Samsung Knox Attestation lets you verify that a Samsung Android device has not been rooted or running unofficial firmware that can compromise the data integrity.
Key attestation verifies the extension data that appears in the first certificate within the chain in a devices hardware-backed keystore. The certificate stores the information ing to an ASN.1 schema.
Definition(s): The process of providing a digital signature for a set of measurements securely stored in hardware, and then having the requester validate the signature and the set of measurements.
Attestation is a cryptographic declaration of device properties based on the security of the Secure Enclave and Apples attestation servers. These identities can be used as authentication for services such as mobile device management (MDM), Wi-Fi, VPN, Kerberos, and Safari.
To remedy this, Keymaster introduced key attestation in Android 7.0 (Keymaster 2) and ID attestation in Android 8.0 (Keymaster 3). Key attestation aims to provide a way to strongly determine if an asymmetric key pair is hardware-backed, what the properties of the key are, and what constraints are applied to its usage.
The SafetyNet Attestation API is an anti-abuse API that allows app developers to assess the Android device their app is running on.
