In this episode of Inventors Quick Tips, the host discusses the upgraded US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) search tool launched in fall 2022, which replaces an outdated system used for over 20 years. The previous interface featured a clunky design with separate search areas for patents from 1976 and applications from 2001. The new tool aims to streamline the search process. While the video provides an overview of the new features, it does not delve into search strategies, for which the host links to another detailed video. The upgraded tool allows users to simultaneously search three databases by default.

The Patent Application Information Retrieval (PAIR) system provides USPTO customers a safe, simple, and secure way to retrieve and download information regarding patent application status. Private PAIR provides secure real-time access to pending application status and history using a registered USPTO.gov account.
For general assistance in completing the patent forms below or to request paper copies of the forms, contact the USPTO Contact Center Division at 1-800-786-9199 (1-800-PTO-9199) or 571-272-1000, and select option 2.
Patent Number Searching If you know the patent number use either Google Patents or the USPTO website to find the patent. Enter the patent number without commas and when using the USPTO website the patent number must be seven numbers in length (add preceding zeros if necessary).
The USPTO maintains a patent assignment database that includes all the assignments recorded since August 1980. Using the database, you can search with the assignors or assignees name, the patent number, application number, publication number, or other identifying information.
The United States Patent and Trademark Office will accept and record only a copy of an original assignment or other document. See MPEP 317. The document submitted for recordation will not be returned to the submitter. If the copy submitted for recordation is illegible, the recorded document will be illegible.
Below listed are a few free patent databases that might help you in your pursuit of patent data search and analysis. Google Patents. Espacenet. USPTO Web Patent Database. PQAI. Patentscope by WIPO. Lens.org.
(2) All records of assignments of patents recorded before May 1, 1957, are maintained by the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA). The records are open to public inspection.
Patent assignment documents can be searched for - and viewed - by using the United States Patent and Trademark Office Patent Assignment Search webpage. You can search for an assignment by using: the assignors name; the assignees name, patent application number, patent number, and other information tied to the patent.
