Full-time employees accrue 4 hours of sick leave very two weeks throughout their federal service, with any unused sick leave hours carried over from one leave year to the next leave year.
For FERS, each month of sick leave would add only 1/12 of 1% to your pension calculation. This comes out to 1% for an entire years worth of sick leave. If your multiplier was 1.1% per year (because you retired at least 62 with at least 20 years of service) then a years worth of sick leave would be worth the 1.1%.
Under current statute, most federal employees can carry up to 240 hours, or 30 days of leave, though some can accrue more. Employees must usually forfeit any accrued leave that exceeds the statutory limit.
The Federal Employees Family Friendly Leave Act authorizes covered full-time employees to use a total of up to 40 hours (5 workdays) of sick leave per year to (1) give care or otherwise attend to a family member having an illness, injury, or other condition which, if an employee had such a condition, would justify the
A year of sick leave (2087 hours) effectively adds around 1% to the pension income of either a federal retiree or a survivor receiving a FERS pension, and 2% for a CSRS pension. If you retire under CSRS, or leave a survivor a CSRS annuity, 100% of unused sick leave can be credited toward the income calculation.
An employee will receive a lump-sum payment for any unused annual leave when he or she separates from Federal service or enters on active duty in the armed forces and elects to receive a lump-sum payment.
And the answer is yes, however keep in mind that annual leave requires supervisor approval and thus the request could be denied at your managers discretion. Also, because sick leave can only be taken for the listed purposes, OPM accentuates that alternative options are available for other circumstances.
Credit for Unused Sick Leave In general, if your leave system charges 8 hours of sick leave for 1 days absence, 8 hours of unused sick leave constitutes 1 day of credit. Days are converted to months and years on the basis of a 2087 hour work year.
