To edit a file, type 'Nano' followed by the file name and location in the terminal. Use the sudo prefix for root rights on system files like the host file. In Nano editor, use arrow keys to navigate and make necessary changes to the file. To save changes, press Ctrl + o keys to bring up the write out prompt, then name the file and press Enter.

2 Answers Press Ctrl + Alt + T to open a terminal. Navigate to the location of your file by inputting cd command into the terminal Eg. cd /documents/ , then enter the following: chmod +x yourfilename.
CTRL + O This shortcut will allow you to save the file. You will be prompted to type in the filename. However, press ENTER to save the new contents to the existing file. CTRL + X You can also save and quit by using this key bind.
To save (or write to) a file that youve made edits to, use the :w command. To quit Vi, use the :q command. To save and quit all at once, combine both commands into :wq.
Executing Files in Linux Using a file manager, open the folder, right-click the file, press Open With, and select the application. Using the Terminal, press Ctrl+Alt+T. Type cd and the folder name. Then, type sudo chmod +x followed by the file name with no spaces.
You can also use the cat command to directly write text to a file, without using the echo command. To do this, you can use the cat command in combination with the or symbol and the
GUI Open up the Nautilus file manager. Locate the file you want to move and right-click said file. From the pop-up menu (Figure 1) select the Move To option. When the Select Destination window opens, navigate to the new location for the file. Once youve located the destination folder, click Select.
In Nautilus (Files) right click file Properties Permissions Check Allow executing file as program.
Press Ctrl + D after entering the text you want in the file. This signals the end of input to the cat and saves the content. To verify that the file has been created and contains the desired content, use the cat command to display the content.
