In this video tutorial, Cathy OBerry demonstrates how to encrypt files on a Mac computer to protect sensitive personal information from unauthorized access. Using Disk Utility, users can easily create an encrypted image from a selected folder, such as an archive folder containing images. By following these simple steps, users can safeguard their data in case their computer gets stolen, ensuring that no one can access their files without the encryption key.

Turning on FileVault provides an extra layer of security by keeping someone from decrypting or getting access to your data without entering your login password. If you use a Mac that doesnt have Apple silicon or the T2 chip, you need to turn on FileVault to encrypt your data.
Once you have it, follow these steps: Open Acrobat and open the PDF. Press Command-D to see security options, or click File Document Properties. Type in the password. Choose No Password from the dropdown menu where the password is used. Click OK, then OK again. Save the PDF.
In newer Macs, most definitely, it does not. Youre not even likely to know its working away in the background, and the encryption process is speedy. However, on some older Macs, there have been reports that FileVault can slow down your machine, with long encryption times, too in some cases up to 10 hours.
Turning on FileVault provides an extra layer of security by keeping someone from decrypting or getting access to your data without entering your login password.
No downside other than the length of time it takes to do the encryption, (Im assuming FileVault,) especially if the internal HD is a spinning disk, and/or if there is little free space on the drive. If there were usability issues, nobody would encrypt their disk. I have 4 Macs, all encrypted.
FileVault is a disk encryption feature that greatly enhances your security. But if you are pressed for space, tradeoffs are inevitable. In fact, FileVault needs a lot of space and memory to encrypt every file on your Mac, and you can save a few gigabytes by pressing a single button.
With FileVault turned on, you can restart your Mac into its Recovery System following the directions above and erase your hard drive using Disk Utility, once youve unlocked it (by selecting the disk, clicking the File menu, and clicking Unlock).
In the Finder on your Mac, open a window, then Control-click the item you want to encrypt in the sidebar. Choose Encrypt [item name] from the shortcut menu. Create a password for the disk and click Encrypt Disk. Important: Be sure to record and keep this password in a safe place.
