So if something happens to your computer, you lose them both. Therefore, having a backup of your catalog located in a different place is essential. If you store your main catalog on your computers internal hard drive, then I recommend storing your catalog backup or a copy of it on an external hard drive.
To move a catalog between a Windows computer and a Mac, copy your catalog, . lrcat-data, preview, and image files from the original computer onto an external drive. Then, attach the drive to the second computer and copy the files to the desired location on the second computer.
Choose Edit Catalog Settings (Windows) or Lightroom Classic Catalog Settings (Mac OS). Choose Back Up Catalog When Lightroom Next Exits. Close the window and then quit Lightroom Classic.
Choose File Export As Catalog. Specify the name and location of the catalog. Indicate whether you want to export the negative files and previews, and then click Save (Windows) or Export Catalog (Mac OS).
You can do this by simply copying the . lrcat file to an external hard drive. The other method is to close Lightroom and do a Catalog backup. Click on the Choose button by Backup folder in the Back Up Catalog dialog box.
