art series on typography and technology and iamp;#39;m going to talk mostly about typography in this slideshow but also a little bit about changes in the surrounding professions and the technology that drove the uh the change in in uh type technology and uh so letamp;#39;s start and what we talked about in the first film uh gutenberg and hand picking type that was pretty much what there was until uh these two machines were invented almost simultaneously hundreds of years later in 1886 and 1887 respectively and the one on the left is an american invention u.s invention the one on the right is a british invention and what they are are the linotype on the left and even says linotype up there itamp;#39;s branded and the monotype on the right and these were machines that you could program with a keyboard and the keyboard was detached in the case of this machine it used sort of a paper tape coated tape to to feed the typing actually into this machine this one had it tended to have the key
