The water snake in Of Mice and Men is a symbol Steinbeck used to represent Lennie and the way a simple man is swallowed by the world. In the beginning, it is a sign of life and tranquility. In the end, however, the innocently-swimming water snake is plucked from the water and eaten by a heron.
The irony of George taking Lennies life is that George did it because he cared for Lennie. George does not want Lennie to die a brutal death, so instead, he decides to take his life himself.
Crooks is the stable hand who takes care of the horses and lives by himself because he is the only black man on the ranch. Along with Candy, Crooks is a character used by Steinbeck to show the effects of discrimination.
Each of the characters represents a kind of person in American society and often one that is a victim of discrimination. For example, Crooks represents a segment of American society that is discriminated against because of race; Curleys wife, because of gender; Candy, because of old age and physical handicap.
Crooks is a stable hand who cares for the horses in the stable. He lives in the barn by himself because of the racial discrimination of the white men on the ranch. He is one of the figures that best illustrates the major themes of loneliness in Of Mice and Men.
In a world about power and strength, Crookss gold-rimmed glasses, which are used for reading, symbolize his intelligence and mental abilities.
In chapter 6, Lennie has killed Curleys wife and run away. The other men intend to torture him before they kill him, so George takes Curleys gun and heads off to find him. Fortunately, he finds Lennie before the rest of the men and has a few moments with him to bring him joy before he kills him out of mercy.
Analysis. Crooks is physically separated from the other workers on the ranch because of his race. This literal isolation makes him angry and bitter towards people when they do approach him, demonstrating the damaging effects of loneliness.
