Manual typesetting was replaced by mechanical typesetting in the 19th century, where one of the earliest machines was designed by Ottmar Mergenthaler in 1884 and called the Linotype machine.
The word typesetting comes from the original process of physical printing. Originally, moveable letters, numbers, and symbols (type) were put in place (set) by hand, making pages ready for print. Nowadays, typesetters use digital layout software, such as InDesign and LateX to arrange text.
Typesetting is thought to have been invented around 1450 by a German man named Johann Gutenberg. Originally, when text needed to be printed several times, they would carve the letters out of wood. But this process did not prove to be effective because wood was too fragile.
The linotype was the long-awaited machine that would bring speed to a whole new area of the printing process: the composing room. From Gutenberg till the 1880s, letters of type needed to be individually cast in molds and put in order by hand, backwards and in reverse order.
Major newspaper publishers retired Linotype and similar hot metal typesetting machines during the 1970s and 1980s, replacing them with phototypesetting equipment and later computerized typesetting and page composition systems.
Phototypesetting or cold type systems first appeared in the early 1960s and rapidly displaced continuous casting machines. These devices consisted of glass or film disks or strips (one per font) that spun in front of a light source to selectively expose characters onto light-sensitive paper.
