Dogs with N/DM genotypes will not have degenerative myelopathy as a result of this allele, but are carriers. They will transmit this allele to 50% of their offspring. Matings between two carriers are predicted to produce 25% of puppies at risk for developing degenerative myelopathy.
DM is an inherited neurologic disease typically affecting dogs around eight years of age or older. It causes gradual muscle wasting and incoordination in the hind limbs, and then progresses to an inability to walk after six to twelve months.
One of the first breeds in which the disease was diagnosed was the German Shepherd, so DM has also been called German Shepherd dog degenerative myelopathy. In the early stages, DM can be misdiagnosed as hip dysplasia, discospondylitis, a spinal tumor or injury, fibrocartilaginous embolism, or myasthenia gravis.
It is likely that advanced diagnostic imaging will be recommended and an MRI scan of the spinal cord will be performed by our advanced imaging team. A sample of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), which surrounds the spinal cord, may also be obtained to allow analysis and exclusion of other disease processes.
How is DM diagnosed? This disease is suspected based on breed, medical history, physical examination, and diagnostic tests. X-rays and other spinal imaging techniques rule out other problems such as hip dysplasia and chronic arthritis, most often during the initial stages of DM.
Sadly, most dogs with degenerative myelopathy eventually lose control of their legs, bladder and bowels completely, and need to be put to sleep. The average life expectancy of a dog with degenerative myelopathy is 1-2 years from diagnosis.
Degenerative Myelopathy, DM (SOD1A) The gene is SOD1A* and the mode of inheritance is recessive. Please note: While we test for the SOD1A variant, we do not test for the SOD1B (Bernese Mountain Dog type) variant at this time. Degenerative Myelopathy genotype results apply only to SOD1A.
DM is a non-painful condition, whereas osteoarthritis and hip dysplasia are uncomfortable. Additionally, a dog with DM will have proprioceptive deficits, meaning they cannot tell if their paws are positioned correctly when placed upside down.
