To trace a sleeve, first mark a long, straight line on your paper. Fold the sleeve in half at the very top, which will be along the grainline. Lay the fold of the sleeve along the line you drew. You will notice that the sleeve pulls away from the line as it gets closer to the shoulder.
There are three primary methods for transferring markings: chalk or wax pencils, tailors tacks, or snips in the fabric (Deaton, 2021). You must know the type of fabric you are working with before using chalk or wax pencils to make sure they are appropriate and will not stain or ruin the garment.
Lay your tracing paper over your pattern, and hold into place using pattern weights or even tins of beans! Just something heavy that will stop it from moving as you trace. Using the pencil, and the ruler to assist if you have one, trace over the lines for the size of the pattern that you want.
Instructions Lay It Out. Place your fabric on the cutting mat. Roll. Roll your tracing wheel along the pattern piece, following the line for your size. Trace the Pattern Markings. Trace the pattern markings, like notches and darts. Remove the Pattern.
You can also use a tracing wheel and dressmakers carbon paper to transfer the pattern directly to the fabric. I have never used this method as I like having my patterns on paper / card ready to go straight onto the fabric, but if you would like to give it a go, you can find a tutorial from Tilly and the Buttons here.
