You may combine paint thinner with paint stripper to enable the polyurethane to be softened, after which it can simply be wiped off the wood surface. Then you must sand the boards surface to give it a clean appearance.
How long must you realistically wait to rub? If you are applying only one thin coat per day in ideal drying conditions, you can usually rub solvent or oil based finishes to satin just a few days after the last coat, though waiting a week is better.
Before refinishing try rubbing it out with rotonsone or pumice with oil or water. Youll get different sheens with different combos of those. Even 0000 steel wool with a gel like Elbow Grease can give a nice low luster hand rubbed look.
Use a power tool like the random orbit sander on flat surfaces, and use handheld paper or a sanding block on irregular regions. Start with 150-grit paper and work your way up to 220-grit, removing any dust particles with a tack cloth or a lightly dampened rag as you go.
Sand the surface to remove polyurethane. You can simply use fine steel wool. You can also use 150-grit sandpaper. The sandpaper will smooth it out and take off the last of the polyurethane.
Removing Varnish by Sanding You would use medium sandpaper (150 grit) to remove the top layers of varnish and then as you get closer to the original surface you want to remove the varnish from you would use finer sandpaper (220 grit).
If the coat feels tacky or sticky after that, let dry until it feels completely dry. Sand the topcoat with 180 to 220 grit sandpaper. Wipe off any residue after sanding. Repeat as needed.
I start with 800-grit, wet-dry sandpaper from a paint or auto parts store (photo above). Wrap the sandpaper around a flat cork block and use a lubricant to speed the process (mineral spirits for a lacquer finish, water for varnish). The lubricant creates a slurry and floats the dust away.
