I use a fine abrasive pad, usually white or gray in color, and pastewax, usually Johnsons or Trewax, which you can find in the floor-care section of your hardware store. Thin the wax with a little naptha or mineral spirits, and rub like crazy. Wait 5 minutes until it hazes, then buff off.
Fine scratches can easily be repaired by wiping or brushing, whereas crazing is best repaired by misting or fogging. If more than fogging is required, lightly sand the surface with a very fine sand paper, such as 320 grit. Next apply a thin coat of shellac.
Place doubled-up paper towels on a section of the top and saturate them with denatured alcohol. Smooth out any bubbles and then cover the paper towels with newspaper or plastic to slow the evaporation. After about 10 minutes, roll back the paper towels and wipe off the loosened shellac.
Using a nail file, gently buff away the shiny layer of hard-to-dislodge polish until it takes on an opaque appearance. This will allow the acetone to penetrate. Be careful not to file down to your actual nail using a softer cardboard emery board rather than a harsh metal file will ensure you dont go too far.
The only way I was ever able to get a consistent look was with some 0000 steel wool, which took away the shine.
You have to wait until the finish is fully cured. A finish that isnt fully cured wont rub out well, and the risk of sanding through the finish is much greater. That means waiting several days for an evaporative finish like shellac or lacquer, and at least a week for reactive finishes like varnish.
How long must you realistically wait to rub? If you are applying only one thin coat per day in ideal drying conditions, you can usually rub solvent or oil based finishes to satin just a few days after the last coat, though waiting a week is better.
