In baseball, there isnt always a force out at first base. A force out at first base typically occurs when there are runners on both first and second base, or when theres a runner on first and the batter hits a ground ball.
A force out occurs everytime at first base. Also, it occurs when a runner is FORCED to the next base by a runner coming behind them.
A runner at first base is always forced to attempt to advance to second base when the batter becomes a runner. Runners at second or third base are forced only when all bases preceding their time-of-pitch base are occupied by other base-runners and the batter becomes a runner.
For example, when a sharply hit ball is caught on one hop by the first baseman, he might immediately tag out the runner at first who is forced to advance to second; but when this is done a runner already at second is no longer forced to advance to third base. The result of such a tag is called removing the force.
Note that the second baseman, tagging such a forced runner coming from first for the third out, also prevents scoring by the speedy runner from third as this tag is considered a force out (any out, tag, or touching the force base, on a forced runner is a force out).
In most cases the runner on first will not tag up on a fly ball. The throw from the outfield to second base is the shortest throw from most of the outfield and leaves little chance for a runner to advance from first successfully.
Pitchers should throw the ball to the catcher underhanded for the force-out at home if they have fielded the ball cleanly and their momentum takes them toward home plate. 2. The pitcher should aim for the catchers chest.
First base tends to have the most force plays, as batters are eligible to be forced out at first any time they put the ball into fair territory and it is not caught in the air.
