Begin sanding the entire wood surface with coarse-grit sandpaper (80 grit), then progress to medium-grit sandpaper (150 grit), and then to a fine-grit sandpaper (220 grit) before you stain. When sanding, sand the entire table with each grit before moving on to the next grit.
Always sand with the grain of the wood, making long, light, even strokes with a padded sanding block. Sanding, more than any other part of refinishing, is a process that cant be rushed. It must be done by hand; power tools can damage the wood. It must be done carefully and thoroughly and always with the grain.
How long must you realistically wait to rub? If you are applying only one thin coat per day in ideal drying conditions, you can usually rub solvent or oil based finishes to satin just a few days after the last coat, though waiting a week is better.
Start out at 800 or 1000 grit, and work on up to whatever sheen you want. You can use MicroMesh or 3Ms Trizact products, probably others, all on your ROS or by hand. No wax required. Another option is to stop at 1500 or 2000 grit and then switch to automotive polishing compound.
Its best to start with a coarse grit sandpaper and work your way up to finer grits, so put an 80-grit sandpaper in your belt sander or orbital sander to begin. A belt sander is ideal for coarse sanding, as is an orbital sander, which utilises oscillating vibrations to make hard work much more pleasant.
The process is called rubbing out, and serves the purpose of getting rid of minor imperfections in a surface film finish, such as varnish or lacquer, (sometimes) leveling the finished surface, and establishing a consistent sheen.
Starting with the roughest sandpaper (60-grit), sand in the direction of the grain. You can sand by hand, but a mechanical sander makes the job go, ahem, much smoother. Finish by wiping down the table with a tack cloth so its free of dust, then sand the surface again, this time with your 120-grit, to polish the wood.
Selecting the Right Grit Sandpaper For heavy sanding and stripping, you need coarse sandpaper measuring 40 to 60 grit; for smoothing surfaces and removing small imperfections, choose 80 to 120 grit sandpaper. For finishing surfaces smoothly, use extra fine sandpaper with 360 to 400 grit.
