Shellac was the first hybrid polish, produced by CND, and you can expect manicures to last about two weeks. Some may find that the chip-free finish lasts longer than this, but its recommended that you get them removed after 14 days as by this time your own nail will have started to grow out.
Step two: acetone away Place a cotton ball over each nail, then wrap a foil square over the top of the finger to keep the cotton ball in contact with the shellac or gel layer. Let the nail soak for 10 to 15 minutes, or until you start to see the polish flake off at the edges. Repeat with the other hand.
You have to wait until the finish is fully cured. A finish that isnt fully cured wont rub out well, and the risk of sanding through the finish is much greater. That means waiting several days for an evaporative finish like shellac or lacquer, and at least a week for reactive finishes like varnish.
I allow the shellac to dry for at least a few (2-3) if possible and longer doesnt hurt. I apply the wax with 0000 steel wool or a maroon synthetic pad. Let it set for a few minutes (usually recommended time is on can).
How long must you realistically wait to rub? If you are applying only one thin coat per day in ideal drying conditions, you can usually rub solvent or oil based finishes to satin just a few days after the last coat, though waiting a week is better.
Use a sanding block, not the flat of your hand. Then mix up a slurry of pumice. Then you can finish off with rottenstone. Rottenstone is finer than pumice.
Though it dries to the touch in about 30 minutes, allow 1 hour between coats. Each coat dissolves into the previous one, creating a single, thicker coat, so dont sand between coats to enhance bonding, as with varnish or urethane finishes. An aerosol can of shellac provides the simplest application method [Photo H].
I start with 800-grit, wet-dry sandpaper from a paint or auto parts store (photo above). Wrap the sandpaper around a flat cork block and use a lubricant to speed the process (mineral spirits for a lacquer finish, water for varnish). The lubricant creates a slurry and floats the dust away.
