Fill the pores. sand it smooth. wipe it with a damp cloth, wait an hour then sand it again, or better yet, use a scraper. apply sanding sealer or oil or water-based filler, following the instructions. once dry, block sand the surface until flat. Apply finish - I like lacquer or oil finishes.
Its best to start with a coarse grit sandpaper and work your way up to finer grits, so put an 80-grit sandpaper in your belt sander or orbital sander to begin. A belt sander is ideal for coarse sanding, as is an orbital sander, which utilises oscillating vibrations to make hard work much more pleasant.
On most raw woods, start sanding in the direction of the grain using a #120-150 grit paper before staining and work up to #220 grit paper. Soft woods such as pine and alder: start with #120 and finish with no finer than #220 (for water base stains) and 180 grit for oil base stains.
All stains require open pores for adequate absorption into the wood. Applying stain over a finished surface will not change the color of the wood. Your cloth will simply wipe off the stain blocked from the pores by the existing finish. Sand bare wood lightly.
Use wood fillers for filling in the scratches A wood filler is a solution of sandable material and hardening resin. It soaks into the wood fiber and bonds with it to fill up scratches. Using a wood filler is pretty easy as you only need to apply it on the scratch, let it dry and sand it down to make the surface even.
Rubbing a thick finish Begin by sanding just enough to flatten the finish, removing any nibs, drips, or other defects (Photo F). Wet-sand solvent-based finishes using soapy water, rubbing oil, or mineral spirits as a lubricant. For water-based finishes, dry-sand with stearated sandpaper.
Clean the Surface. Use gentle soap and water to remove dirt and oils from the tables existing finish. Apply Stripper. If the table is painted or varnished, youll need to strip the surface. Clean With Mineral Spirits. Sand Table Surface. Apply Stain. Apply Finish.
After any repairs or filling is done, give the wood a final sanding. Start with medium-grit sandpaper and progressively move to finer grit. The final sanding should be done with very fine-grit sandpaper, which helps create a smooth surface and opens up the woods pores for stain absorption.
