How long must you realistically wait to rub? If you are applying only one thin coat per day in ideal drying conditions, you can usually rub solvent or oil based finishes to satin just a few days after the last coat, though waiting a week is better.
Most of the time, you have to finish the finish. The process is called rubbing out, and serves the purpose of getting rid of minor imperfections in a surface film finish, such as varnish or lacquer, (sometimes) leveling the finished surface, and establishing a consistent sheen.
I start with 800-grit, wet-dry sandpaper from a paint or auto parts store (photo above). Wrap the sandpaper around a flat cork block and use a lubricant to speed the process (mineral spirits for a lacquer finish, water for varnish). The lubricant creates a slurry and floats the dust away.
SURFACE PREPARATION Begin with #120 grit sandpaper and progress though #150, #180 and #220 grits. Before staining, remove all sanding dust and dirt with a vacuum, tack cloth, or rag dampened with mineral spirits. For grease and glue, remove with a rag dampened with mineral spirits.
We recommend using P120-150 grit for surfaces such as flooring and P150-180 grit for finer surfaces such as furniture, depending on guidance from the oil manufacturer. Please always follow the oil or wax manufacturers recommendations.
Sanding with 100- to 220-grit sandpaper before oiling the surface is recommended if the wood has issues, but sanding with very fine-grit sandpaper can close off the wood grain and cause problems with your finished product.
Cleaning Off the Dust I used a brush and rag to remove as much dust as possible. Then I used my shop vac to remove even more dust particles. After using the shop vac, I took it out to the front porch to apply the boiled linseed oil. You do want to have a clean surface to apply the linseed oil.
Before applying Boiled Linseed Oil, it is important to treat your wood. Start by sanding down your wood surface with sandpaper that has a grit of around 180.
