myself and others have noted that thereamp;#39;s been a lot of issues in the literature with interpretation of xps spectra and in particular the interpretation of the metals the transition metals xbs thereamp;#39;s been kind of a proliferation of faulty data uh ongoing within the community where thereamp;#39;s some sighting of erroneous data and this is even happening in high impact and well well-regarded journals so the point kind of is that xbs is not just a point and shoot type technique there is a need for expertise on both the analysis side and on the interpretation side of things um and so i and many others in the xps community and these are just some of the the the publications that weamp;#39;ve put forward in that regard uh have been working to kind of fix this and i know this is not just an xbs issue thereamp;#39;s been struggles in the broader analytical community with these sorts of problems some of the work here uh we started back in kind of before i started back in ab

Fundamental Principles of X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy XPS is an application of the photoelectric effect (Acrobat (PDF) 184kB Jul29 21) described by Einstein (1905, and was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1921), in which electrons are emitted from atoms in response to impinging electromagnetic radiation.
How XPS works. X-rays (photons) are shot onto a sample, and when electrons in the sample absorb enough energy, they are ejected from the sample with a certain kinetic energy. The energy of those ejected electrons is analyzed by a detector and a plot of these energies and relative numbers of electrons is produced.
Here, binding energy is the energy of an electron attracted to a nucleus; photon energy is the energy of X-ray photons being used by the spectrometer, and the kinetic energy is the energy of the ejected electrons from the sample.
It is a quantitative spectroscopic technique which utilises core level shift to obtain information on the chemical and electronic state of a samples elemental components to a penetration depth of ~ 10-100 .
The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) technique consists of exciting a surface with X-ray photons into the vacuum, with which electrons are detached from the internal levels of the sample to be analyzed.
XPS is a surface-sensitive quantitative spectroscopic technique that measures the elemental composition at the parts per thousand range, chemical state and electronic state of the elements that exist within a material.
