When youre looking for a high-gloss finish, lacquer will give you the best results. Use silicon carbide sandpaper and water to wet-sand the treated surface and then rub it until it displays a smooth and even sheen.
In general, itd be best to lightly wet the lacquered surface and use 320 to 400 grit sandpaper for finishing. While lacquer can be sprayed on, using a brush makes it easier to apply an even coat, so the directions below apply to brushing only.

Most of the time, you have to finish the finish. The process is called rubbing out, and serves the purpose of getting rid of minor imperfections in a surface film finish, such as varnish or lacquer, (sometimes) leveling the finished surface, and establishing a consistent sheen.
The finishing process can be easier when you use pumice stone or steel wool. These can remove big imperfections that were not able to be removed by sandpaper. They can also help in creating a sheen to the finish. After this step, use paint thinner to wipe down the lacquer finish.
After the lacquer cures for a few weeks it can be sanded perfectly level and buffed to a high gloss. During those weeks, almost all of the solvents evaporate and the remaining solids get dry and hard.
Wait a day or so to let the clear coat harden if the finishing is new. At this point, if you see orange peel or trash on the surface, wet sand with 1000 or 1200 grit wet or dry automotive grade sandpaper. This will smooth out the surface and allow for a super shine finish. Get a buffer.
Rub the lacquer with coarse- or medium-grit micro-mesh. You can purchase micro-mesh online, or in a hardware or home improvement store. You can also use finishing paper to get rid of scratches and blemishes. Place a cork sanding block on top of the micro-mesh sheet to make the sanding process easier.
