Oil-based stains are a one-coat application because the oil will repel the second coat whereas with water-based stains, the second coat can still absorb.
Stain can be applied with a bristle brush, a foam brush, or a cloth. On woods with large, open pores, such as oak, mahogany and ash, increase your pressure to work the stain into the pores. Rubbing or brushing against the direction of the grain will help fill deep pores with stain.

The distant cousin to the more common coat of paint, staining is prevalent in home improvement projects, such as furniture refinishing, banisters, stair treads, doors, and more. Heres the thing: you want to apply and wipe off the excess stain with a clean cloth wiper before it dries.
Rubbing rather than blotting. Its tempting to rub a stain vigorously, but that can cause two problems. First, you could cause the stain to spread. Second, you can cause undue strain to the fabric, damaging it. Instead of rubbing, remember to blot gently and repeatedly.
Wipe the stain off immediately if youd like a lighter tone. But for a deeper tone, leave the stain on the wood for 5 to 10 minutes before wiping it off. Be sure to wipe off all the excess stain going in the direction of the grain of the wood.
Mistake #1: Using a water-based stain As the stain dries, it often leaves the wood with an undesirable, rough texture. Interestingly, though water-based stains soak into the wood enough to make it swell, they do not absorb deep enough into the wood to adhere thoroughly.
In most cases, we recommend removing the old stain or coating by blasting the logs or wood with crushed glass. This media is as fine as table salt, silica free and 100% environmentally friendly. Once the old coatings are removed and the logs are brought down to bare wood, a new stain can be applied.
