The delete control character (also called DEL or rubout) is the last character in the ASCII repertoire, with the code 127. It is supposed to do nothing and was designed to erase incorrect characters on paper tape. It is denoted as ^? in caret notation and is U+007F in Unicode.
In some keyboards, both physical and specially virtual ones, the U+2423 ␣ OPEN BOX symbol is used to label the space bar.
It is easy to turn off the overtype mode just hit the Insert key (also known as the Ins key) on your keyboard. The Insert key is always near the top-right corner of the keyboard. After hitting the Inset key, you can type any letters on your text and see if the new letters replace the letters already on the text.
You might be thinking your PCs been , but the issue is usually that youve pressed the Ins (Insert) key on the keyboard. This wikiHow teaches you how to toggle on/off overtype modethe mode that makes your new letters replace existing onesas well as how to disable it completely in Microsoft Word.
Theres a chance that Word deletes text as you type due to a malfunctioning add-in. If youve installed multiple Word add-ins to boost your productivity, it will be time-consuming to check them individually. To test if one of the installed add-ins is causing the issue at hand, you should start Word in safe mode.
This is caused by the Insert key on your keyboard, it replaces the letters to the right as you explained. Simply press the Insert key and it will deactivate the replace mode. Pressing it the second time reactivates it. I guess you are in replace mode, just press the Insert key on your keyboard.
The backspace key is a keyboard key thats used to erase any character or symbol before the cursor on your screen. Its usually located just above the Enter key and is often indicated by an arrow pointing to the left.
Press the Ins key to toggle overtype mode off. The other way is to disable the insert key but like you mention you use it all the time so it defeats the purpose. Or remapping the keyboard for each app. Was this reply helpful?
