I use a fine abrasive pad, usually white or gray in color, and pastewax, usually Johnsons or Trewax, which you can find in the floor-care section of your hardware store. Thin the wax with a little naptha or mineral spirits, and rub like crazy. Wait 5 minutes until it hazes, then buff off.
Solvents for Shellac To dissolve shellac, I like to use anhydrous (or water-free) isopropyl alcohol as the solvent. It might take a bit longer to dissolve the shellac, but the advantages outweigh this slight inconvenience.
Most of the time, you have to finish the finish. The process is called rubbing out, and serves the purpose of getting rid of minor imperfections in a surface film finish, such as varnish or lacquer, (sometimes) leveling the finished surface, and establishing a consistent sheen.
The technique used to wipe on shellac (called padding) is easy to master. Take a soft, lint free cloth and fold over the edges to create a flat pad about 2 square. Dip the pad into the shellac until its saturated. Wipe it on as if you were brushing with long strokes.
Just continue to do a light sanding with 120, just to knock off any fuzziness, then continue with adding more coats of shellac. Dont use a paint brush, but instead use an applicator pad which you make them by hand.
Fine scratches can easily be repaired by wiping or brushing, whereas crazing is best repaired by misting or fogging. If more than fogging is required, lightly sand the surface with a very fine sand paper, such as 320 grit. Next apply a thin coat of shellac.
How long must you realistically wait to rub? If you are applying only one thin coat per day in ideal drying conditions, you can usually rub solvent or oil based finishes to satin just a few days after the last coat, though waiting a week is better.
I start with 800-grit, wet-dry sandpaper from a paint or auto parts store (photo above). Wrap the sandpaper around a flat cork block and use a lubricant to speed the process (mineral spirits for a lacquer finish, water for varnish). The lubricant creates a slurry and floats the dust away.
