The Dr. Martens sandals are not overly wide for your foot although they have a chunky appearance. They are true to size but if you sit in the middle of sizes then we would recommend sizing up to help you with breaking them in. So just to be clear if you are sometimes a 5 then size up to a size 6.
If youre ordering a new pair of Dr Martens you should size up to prevent blisters, discomfort and more while you break the boots in.
For the safest method, a tight fastening is the best way to go. Dr. Martens are notoriously heavier than other shoes, so you want to avoid a loose lacing.
The time it takes to stretch Doc Martens can vary. If youre wearing them around the house with thick socks, it might take a few weeks of consistent wear. Using a shoe stretcher with a stretching spray can speed up the process, often showing results within 24 to 48 hours.
The best way to measure your foot at home is with a Brannock device. Once you have this number, compare it to Doc Martens range of sizes. If your shoe is just at (or slightly above) a certain size, its always best to size up. While sizing down might produce a snugger fit, sizing up will likely be more comfortable.
Dr. Martens themselves acknowledge that their boots can be slightly tight on width but will stretch over time .
We recommend ordering a size down and measuring your foot to find your perfect fit.
We asked both our community and the Dr. Martens team experts, collated and tested our favourites and to come up with a definitive list of Boot Doctor-certified tips. If you normally take a half size, we recommend sizing down. The boots should feel tight, but not uncomfortable.
