You can rub out all types of film forming finishes, including shellac, lacquer, oil based varnish and polyurethane, waterbased coatings and catalyzed or conversion coatings.
You should use an automotive polishing compound and a buffer for big areas. Small areas will have to be polished by hand unless you have some funky buffing tools. Make sure the poly has cured for a minimum of 4-5 days at 70f. Do not try to polish an uncured film.

Before applying Boiled Linseed Oil, it is important to treat your wood. Start by sanding down your wood surface with sandpaper that has a grit of around 180.
How long must you realistically wait to rub? If you are applying only one thin coat per day in ideal drying conditions, you can usually rub solvent or oil based finishes to satin just a few days after the last coat, though waiting a week is better.
0:23 4:10 So Im just going to start rubbing this in long strokes. And youll kind of feel the sandpaper.MoreSo Im just going to start rubbing this in long strokes. And youll kind of feel the sandpaper. Create almost a suction cup on the finish.
The longer you wait the better. Shellac, solvent and water-based lacquers and two part finishes should cure at least a week. Oil-based varnishes and polyurethane should cure at least two weeks.
You have to wait until the finish is fully cured. A finish that isnt fully cured wont rub out well, and the risk of sanding through the finish is much greater. That means waiting several days for an evaporative finish like shellac or lacquer, and at least a week for reactive finishes like varnish.
