Whats the meaning of wet signature? A wet signature simply means youve made an imprint on a physical piece of paper. In other words, you actually physically signed a document with a pen, seal, or other identifying mark.
A wet signature is created when a person physically marks a document. In some cultures this is done by writing a name in a stylized, cursive format (or even a simple X) on a piece of paper.
When should you still use a wet signature? There are a few occasions when you must collect a wet signature to make a document legally binding. Wet signatures are still required for certain documents pertaining to wills, trusts, adoptions, divorce proceedings, court orders, evictions and insurance benefits.
While a wet signature is a physical signature requiring pen and paper, an e-signature is an equally legally-binding acknowledgment of an online document. Wet ink signatures require a physical mark over a physical document, whereas electronic signatures can be executed online and approved instantly.
A wet signature can be scanned to digitize the document and store it securely online. This can be done by signing a physical contract using a pen and scanning the signed document. However, this still requires more manual work than just using an eSignature tool to sign agreements.
Generally, wet signature is known under various names, such as: Handwritten signature. Physical signature. Wet ink signature.
Despite this global recognition of eSignatures, there are still some instances where a wet signature is mandatory to meet legal signature requirements in the UK. Certain legal documents pertaining to wills, deeds and lasting powers of attorney for example, must still be signed in person with a wet signature.
