The process is called rubbing out, and serves the purpose of getting rid of minor imperfections in a surface film finish, such as varnish or lacquer, (sometimes) leveling the finished surface, and establishing a consistent sheen.
While some woods naturally have more resistance to moisture and decay, sealing raw wood is generally recommended to enhance its durability and longevity.
Start by selecting the appropriate sealant for your wood. Polyurethane is a popular choice for its robustness perfect for dark woods, while polycrylic works well for lighter woods. If you prefer a softer look, you can opt for wax finishes on smaller, decorative pieces.
You can make wood 100-percent waterproof by completely saturating the wood with a sealant and building up the product so it forms a hard shell. How many coats of polyurethane does it take to waterproof? Three to four coats of polyurethane are needed to waterproof wood.
A great way to seal raw wood for outdoor use is with a combination stain and sealer. The stain will protect the wood from harmful UV rays and the sealant protects wood from water damage or warping.
A popular choice for this type of sealing job is Annie Sloans Clear Wax. This sealant stands out for the user-friendly application process and high-quality results. It also pairs well with both raw wood and painted wood pieces.
How long must you realistically wait to rub? If you are applying only one thin coat per day in ideal drying conditions, you can usually rub solvent or oil based finishes to satin just a few days after the last coat, though waiting a week is better.
Overall, varnish is an excellent choice for those who want to protect their wood surfaces and maintain a natural appearance. Polyurethane is an excellent way to protect your wood surfaces from water damage and wear and tear. It is also ideal for enhancing the natural appearance of wood, as it offers a warm, amber tone.
