A cervical biopsy may be done to find cancer or precancer cells on the cervix. Cells that appear to be abnormal, but are not yet cancerous, are called precancerous. These abnormal cells may be the first sign of cancer that may develop years later.
Pap test. During a Pap test, a tool called a speculum holds the vaginal walls apart. A sample of cells from the cervix is collected using a soft brush and a flat scraping device called a spatula (1 and 2). The cells are placed in a bottle that contains a solution to preserve them (3).
Endocervical curettage procedure: The doctor inserts a small, thin tooleither a curette (which looks like a narrow spoon) or a brush into the endocervical area. This tool is then gently scraped against the walls of the cervical canal, removing some of the tissue.
Avoid intercourse, douching, or using any vaginal medicines or spermicidal foams, creams or jellies for two days before having a Pap test. These may wash away or hide concerning cells. Try not to schedule a Pap test during your menstrual period. While it can be done at this time, it is best not to do so. You may feel slight pressure when the speculum enters your vagina. You may feel a slight burning or stinging when the solution comes into contact with your cervix. If you need a biopsy, you may feel a sharp pinch or a sensation like a period cramp when the tissue sample is excised.

A Pap smear is a test to check for cervical cancer. If you have a cervix and are between the ages of 21 and 65, you should have the test every 3 years. The test is performed by inserting a speculum into your vagina and collecting some cells from your cervix that are analyzed at a lab. The doctor or nurse will use a special brush to collect some cells from your cervix. Then the doctor or nurse will send these cells to a lab, where an expert will check for abnormal cells or for the types of HPV that can cause cervical cancer. These tests take about 5 minutes.
