The sampler should be careful to maintain a consistent rate of flow when collecting flush samples. Open up the tap and let the water run for 30 seconds. Then, take a 250mL sample. Make sure to label this sample bottle as the flush sample.
All samples should be collected before the facility opens and before the fixtures have been used (EPA recommends an 8 to 18-hour stagnation period). One 250-mL sample should be taken at each fixture. Note this is a first-draw sample. Therefore, collect the sample immediately after opening the faucet or valve.
Sample your water when youre able to drop it off within 24 hours. Water samples that sit longer than 24 hours will lead to inaccurate results. Take the sample from an indoor tap, removing any aerators, screens , or other attachments from the faucet. Turn on the cold water for two to three minutes.
Wear gloves and eye protection when collecting samples. Rinse the bottle and cap three times with sample water and fill the bottle to within one to two inches from the top. Place the sample into a cooler with ice for immediate delivery or shipment to the laboratory. Sterile 125 or 150 mL plastic bottles must be used.
First-Draw Lead Sample Bottle (Orange Label) Lead accumulates in water from pipes as the water sits in the pipe. For this reason, this water sample should be collected from water that has sat in the pipes for at least six hours (called a first-draw sample).
If a sample exceeds the holding time, it is considered suspect, and the sample collection may have to be repeated. Typically, water samples have a maximum holding time that ranges anywhere from six hours to six months.
