Providing the RAW files could undermine their efforts and potentially reflect poorly on their work if the client decides to edit the files themselves. Another reason why a photographer may not want to give their clients RAW files is that it could damage their professional reputation.
YES I Give You the Wedding Photography RAW Files! RAW photography files are the original photographs produced by a camera they are kind of like digital negatives. So the question I occasionally get asked is Can we have the RAW files of our wedding photos? My answer to this is always a simple yes!
Many sports and news photographers shoot both RAW and JPEG; dual card slots facilitates this even more easily. The JPEGs get sent to the media outlets, but the RAW is always there if needed. I shoot events a bit, and I wouldnt dream of not shooting RAW.
Shooting photos simultaneously in RAW and JPEG is useful when you need quick access to ready-to-use images while retaining the flexibility to perform detailed edits later.
A JPEG file will give you at LEAST one full F-stop above and below proper exposure for correction purposes. For our use as outdoor photographers whose work appears in magazines, JPEG is actually more forgiving than the slide film we shot for years, which has essentially zero latitude.
One of the largest benefits of RAW is the ability to recover shadows and highlights in post-processing without bringing in the grainy noise usually associated with high ISO settings. RAWs are very forgiving if you have severely underexposed or overexposed areas.
If you prioritize image quality, editing flexibility, and have the time to invest in post-processing, capturing the image in RAW is recommended. On the other hand, if convenience, smaller file sizes, and ease of sharing are important to you, then shooting in JPEG format may be more suitable.
