Arriving a decade after Toy Story, Chicken Little was Disneys first fully computer-animated feature.
The Origins of CGI in Filmmaking Although Toy Story brought CGI to the theatrical mainstream, computer generated imagery had been used in filmmaking since the 1970s. Early examples include the proto-CGI in Westworld (1973) and more prominent digital effects in Tron (1982) and The Last Starfighter (1984).
History. The first feature film to use CGI as well as the composition of live-action film with CGI was Vertigo, which used abstract computer graphics by John Whitney in the opening credits of the film. The first feature film to make use of CGI with live action in the storyline of the film was the 1973 film Westworld.
In Fury Road, it was disclosed that 90% of the effects were practical, with minimal CGI used only to enhance the already impressive real footage1. The films behind-the-scenes footage proved this claim, showing that CGI was only added as a cherry on top of already remarkable footage1.
The production of Tron marked the first time that computer-generated imagery (CGI) had been extensively used in a feature film. A full fifteen minutes of the film consists of moving images generated entirely by computer. Additionally, there are over two hundred scenes that utilize computer-generated backgrounds.
Even in trailers for Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, the prequel looks notably different from 2015s Mad Max: Fury Road. While the deep orange hues of the outback-turned-wasteland persist, Furiosas overall use of CGI is much more apparent and somewhat jarring.
The 1982 science fiction film Tron is widely regarded as a groundbreaking moment in the history of computer-generated imagery (CGI). The film used CGI extensively to create a digital world inside a computer, which was a groundbreaking achievement in the field of computer graphics.
To use CGI, designers first make the movies graphics. They make the graphics look real by paying close attention to details like texture and lighting. Then, they drop them into the film. If theyve done their job well, CGI fits right in with the movie.
