The use of quotation marks, also called inverted commas, is very slightly complicated by the fact that there are two types: single quotes (` ) and double quotes ( ).
If youre not careful, its very easy to end up with right quotation marks on the left side of a word, like this. Use the ` character for a left inverted comma and the character for a right inverted comma. To produce double quotes, simply repeat the characters, ``like this.
LaTeX treats left and right quotes as different entities. For single quotes, ` (on British keyboards, this symbol is found on the key adjacent to the number 1) gives a left quote mark, and is the right. For double quotes, simply double the symbols, and LaTeX will interpret them ingly.
Double quote are produced by typing two in a row: ``text.
Left quotes are coded as `` (it will the left-most key on the upper row below ~ in many keyboards). Right quotes are given by the two symbols (or you may want to use the single symbol ). Thus we have ``quote, unquote . The same goes for single quotes, or `quote, unquote.
Otherwise, use the ` key (grave-accent or backtick) for the opening quote, and the (apostrophe) key for the closing quote, doubled if you want double quotes; LATEX will automatically typeset these as real quotes: He said, ``Im just going out. He said, Im just going out.
