hello and welcome back to my channel where i share painting time lapses and top oil painting tips today iamp;#39;d like to share a piece that took me a bit longer than usual this was a commissioned portrait and while i am thrilled with the final product the process was definitely a journey and i thought itamp;#39;d be a great opportunity to talk about self-doubt as a painter also how that can crop up when trying to capture like this and what to do about it as you can see in this painting i lay down an initial wash with a couple of transparent pigments plus gamsol i wipe that down so itamp;#39;s less wet and runny and then immediately get to work sketching out my portrait for the sketch i had thinned out my paint but only to a minimal degree so the lines would stand out a bit then I jump into color which I think was probably a mistake because youamp;#39;ll quickly see my drawing was off and that meant I wasted some of that earlier time filling in color that I just wound up having to

Start with an outline, beginning with the eyes and working outward from there. Many portrait painters draw the image first, then seal the drawing with a translucent layer of acrylic paint mixed with clear medium, then let it dry. If you dont want to draw freehand, then use a projector to trace the image.
The forehead is a great place to start as its a large flat plane and often has the lightest value, so you can start building up the paint here and experimenting with finding the colours of your face, then move down towards the cheeks/side of the face/chin once youre happy with the forehead.
I personally always start with drawing the eyes first, then the eye brow, the nose, lips, then i put in the shape of the head in relation to what i have down. i dont ever have a problem with making the face too small or too big anymore. This system works for me now.
Here are the steps Ive developed to paint a successful portrait from a photo: Choose a photo with great highlights and shadows. Sketch or trace the image onto your support. Lay out ONLY the colors you need for your palette. Start by painting the eyes. Block in your shadows and darks. Add midtone colors to the portrait.
Start out with a simple circle drawn loosely. Next determine the midpoint of the face with a vertical line coming off the circle. This will depend on which way your portrait or reference is facing. From these simple shapes and lines, we can start building out the rest of the features using simple lines at first.
The technique is simple: Once the canvas has been covered with a solid layer of dark or medium-dark paint, a lintless cloth or brush can be used to bring back the white of the canvas. The cloth or brush can be dry, or it can be dipped in a bit of odorless mineral spirits (for oil paint) or water (for acrylic paint).
