When youve torn your ACL you will lose a range of motion. Try bending your knee and then straightening it out. If you cant bend your knee to a 90 degree angle or straighten out your leg because of pain, stiffness and swelling, then it is likely that youve torn your ACL.
To determine whether a tear is partial or complete, a doctor will perform several manual tests and order an MRI. Tests include: Lachman test: The physician will try to pull the shin bone away from the thigh bone. If the ACL is torn but still intact, the bones wont move or will do so only slightly.
How is an ACL injury diagnosed? An ACL tear can be diagnosed by a physician through a history and physical examination. On physical examination, the physician can specifically assess the amount of motion present and determine if the ACL is torn.
Therefore, an ACL sprain is a Grade 1 or 2 injury to the ACL. The ligament has sustained some minor to moderate tearing, but the ligament has remained intact and can still perform its designed function. An ACL tear is when the ligament has partially or fully torn and can no longer perform its designed function.
ACL tears are often associated with a popping sound, immediate swelling, and a feeling of instability. MCL tears commonly cause knee pain and tenderness along the inner side of the knee. Meniscus tears may produce a popping sensation, locking or catching of the knee, and difficulty straightening the leg.
Signs and symptoms of an ACL injury usually include: A loud pop or a popping sensation in the knee. Severe pain and inability to continue activity. Rapid swelling.
The short answer is yes. After the pain and swelling subsides and if there is no other injury to your knee, you may be able to walk in straight lines, go up and down stairs and even potentially jog in a straight line. The ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) is an important ligament that provides stability to the knee.
After your injury, you should not play sports or do other strenuous activities until you and your provider decide what treatment is best for you. If you have surgery to reconstruct your ACL: Follow instructions on self-care at home. You will need physical therapy to regain the full use of your knee.
