Trigger point release is a general term that describes procedures that relax tension and relieves pain in muscles that contain trigger points. It usually refers to manual techniques involving pressure and stretching muscles, but can also refer to other techniques such as the use of needles.
At-Home Trigger Point Massage Heres how: Find the tight spot (it often feels like a marble) and apply pressure with your thumb or finger. Press firmly for 30 to 90 seconds, taking deep breaths. Repeat for three to five minutes.
Luckily, trigger point massage is a simple, non-invasive way to release those tight spots and alleviate your pain.
A numbing agent or steroid is injected into the trigger point. Oftentimes, the act of injecting the needle helps break up the muscle tension. Dry needling is another technique that involves inserting a needle around the trigger point to help dissolve the knots and tension in the muscles.
One can use your fingers or a tennis ball to massage the muscle. Another is to use a foam roller. To find the trigger points, you can either feel for them yourself or have someone else do it for you. Once youve found them, youll want to apply pressure for 20-30 seconds and then release.
Trigger point self-massage 101 Find the tight spots (odds are you wont have to look too hard). Use your fingers (or tools like foam rollers and massage balls) to press firmly into the trigger points. Repeat for three to five minutes, ideally as often as five or six times per day.
Techniques Run your hands over the area where youre feeling pain: Is there one specific point that hurts? You can either use a tennis ball as your personal trigger point massage ball or simply use your fingers. Keep going until things start to feel a bit looser and more comfortable, but dont overdo it.
Massage guns can release knots and trigger points in specific areas, restoring optimal muscle function.
