Why is XPS used only for surface analysis?

XPS only obtains surface information because it is a surface analysis technique and the obtained chemical information can be strongly affected by surface oxidation and contamination. XPS Spectromicroscopy as an Optimised Technique for Materials Characterisation.

What are the limitations of XPS?

Because XPS is a surface technique, there is a limited amount of organic information XPS can provide. XPS is limited to measurements of elements having atomic numbers of 3 or greater, making it unable to detect hydrogen or helium. XPS spectra also take a long time to obtain.

What does a shift in XPS peak mean?

The main cause of the peak shift in XPS spectra is mostly related to chemical shifts due to the presence or absence of the chemical states of the element having different formal oxidation state. And the intensity may also be changed bcos it is directly linked to the number of atoms in the respective chemical state.

Why is XPS a surface-sensitive technique?

The area under a peak in the spectrum is a measure of the relative amount of the element represented by that peak. The peak shape and precise position indicates the chemical state for the element. XPS is a surface sensitive technique because only those electrons generated near the surface escape and are detected.

What is the chemical shift in XPS?

Chemical shift arises in the initial state from the displacement of the electronic charge from the atom towards its ligands, reducing the electrostatic potential at the atom. There is a final state shift due to the polarization of the ligand by the core on the central atom.

Why is XPS more selective to measuring near surface atoms?

Only electrons generated near the surface can escape without losing too much energy for detection. This means that XPS data is collected from the top few nanometers of the surface.

Why is XPS so surface sensitive?

XPS is surface sensitive due to the short inelastic mean free path, , of electrons in Condensed materials. Typical values are 12 nm for metals, 1.54 nm for oxides and down to 3 nm for organic materials.

Why is auger electron spectroscopy surface sensitive?

Surface sensitivity in AES arises from the fact that emitted electrons usually have energies ranging from 50 eV to 3 keV and at these values, electrons have a short mean free path in a solid.
