Congestive cardiac failure (CCF), also known as congestive heart failure (CHF) or simply heart failure, refers to the clinical syndrome caused by inherited or acquired abnormalities of heart structure and function, causing a constellation of symptoms and signs that lead to decreased quality and quantity of life.
Congestive Heart Failure Lung sounds can be assessed by chest auscultation (see Chapter 24). Crackles are adventitious or abnormal breath sounds that sound like bubbling or popping and can reflect fluid overload in the lungs because of an acute exacerbation of or onset of heart failure.
Cheyne-Stokes respiration is an abnormal breathing pattern which commonly occurs in patients with decompensated congestive heart failure and neurologic diseases, in whom periods of tachypnea and hyperpnea alternate with periods of apnea.
It may seem erratic, with moments of rapid breaths followed by periods of slowed or irregular breathing. This pattern often indicates the bodys diminishing ability to regulate breathing. Some providers may call this form of breathing mandibular breathing or guppy breathing as it appears like a fish out of water.
It can be diagnosed in four stagesA, B, C and Dranging in severity of damage and symptoms. Getting diagnosed with heart failure usually starts when you notice symptoms such as shortness of breath, fatigue, rapid or irregular heartbeat or swelling in the legs, ankles, feet or abdomen, says Dr. Pia.
Congestive heart failure is a syndrome that can be caused by a variety of abnormalities, including pressure and volume overload, loss of muscle, primary muscle disease or excessive peripheral demands such as high output failure. In the usual form of heart failure, the heart muscle has reduced contractility.
Due to unstable central control and imprecise feedback support in patients with heart failure and stroke, the PCO2 levels during hyperventilation will fall below the apnea threshold levels, resulting in apnea again. These cycles of apnea and hypercapnia continue, resulting in Cheyne-Stokes respiration.
People with severe left-sided heart failure may experience orthopnea, shortness of breath when lying down. This troubled breathing is caused by fluid accumulating in the lungs when you lie down. You may wake up wheezing or gasping for air, called paroxysmal nocturnal dyspnea.
