If you need to authenticate on a Point-to-Point network, then you need the Point-to-Point Protocol, or PPP, to be able to provide authentication on an analog dial-up and ISDN and other types of Point-to-Point Networks. There are also derivatives to PPP, you may find PPTP which is Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol. Commonly youamp;#39;ll see that in Windows operating systems. And thereamp;#39;s PPPoE, which is to Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet, which is commonly used to authenticate over a DSL network. If you need to authenticate over these non-ethernet networks, itamp;#39;s very common to use PAP, CHAP, or MS-CHAP to be able to accomplish that. One of the most basic authentication methods is PAP, or Password Authentication Protocol. You would commonly see PAP used on very old operating systems or legacy systems. And itamp;#39;s very unusual to see PAP used by itself these days. Thatamp;#39;s because PAP communicates in the clear. Thereamp;#39;s no encryption or any additio

PAP is a PPP authentication method that validates users with passwords. It is an internet standard, password-based authentication protocol and is used to connect a remote user to a server. PAP does not encrypt data and sends it to the authentication server as a plaintext password.
PAP (Password Authentication Protocol): An authentication protocol that uses a password. Not the strongest authentication protocol. CHAP (Challenge-Handshake Authentication Protocol): Authenticates a user or network host to an authenticating entity (e.g., an internet service provider). Stronger than PAP.
PAP, or password authentication protocol, is a point-to-point protocol (PPP) authentication method that uses passwords to validate users. It is an internet standard (RFC 1334), password-based authentication protocol. Using PAP, data is not encrypted. It is sent to the authentication server as plain text.
Other uses of PAP PAP is also used to describe password authentication in other protocols such as RADIUS and Diameter. However, those protocols provide for transport or network layer security, and therefore that usage of PAP does not have the security issues seen when PAP is used with PPP.
PAP is more susceptible to cyberattacks than CHAP because it doesnt have the built-in safeguards that CHAP has. Specifically, CHAP doesnt transmit passwords, has an ongoing authentication mechanism, and uses an encrypted calculation to help each entity verify the identity of the other.
CHAP is a stronger authentication method than PAP, because the secret is not transmitted over the link, and because it provides protection against repeated attacks during the life of the link. As a result, if both PAP and CHAP authentication are enabled, CHAP authentication is always performed first.
