The Basic Rule: Keep one idea to one paragraph The basic rule of thumb with paragraphing is to keep one idea to one paragraph. If you begin to transition into a new idea, it belongs in a new paragraph. There are some simple ways to tell if you are on the same topic or a new one.
One simple model for paragraph structure is PEEL: Point, Evidence, Evaluation, Link (to the assignment topic or next paragraph).
A paragraph does not need five sentences. It can have one or more sentences depending on the medium, topic, audience, and purpose of the text. There are no distinct guidelines on how long a paragraph should be. However, five is usually the maximum number of sentences that make up a good paragraph.
Paragraph breaks should be visually clear. There should either be white space in between paragraphs, or each paragraphs first line should be indented on the left. On the web, its generally easiest to type an extra return between each paragraph to create white space.
As remarked above, the first paragraph after a title or section heading is not indented. Every succeeding paragraph should be indented; the tab key on any keyboard will do this for you. For certain kinds of writing, such as technical reports and business letters, there is another format which is sometimes preferred.
Expand individual paragraphs Ask how and why questions. Add (more) concrete examples and evidence. Expand the introduction and/or conclusion. Add a sentence or two at the end of each paragraph summarizing (and/or refuting) the arguments presented in that paragraph.
In short: Each paragraph should have one main idea. That idea is usually expressed in the first sentence, sometimes known as the topic sentence. Every other sentence in the paragraph should related back to that main idea or topic, usually as some kind of supporting information (facts, examples, quotations, etc.).
Its usually a good idea to start with a few introductory sentences before launching into whatever argument or request you want your reader to consider. But after youve set the context, start a new paragraph. The break is a way of telling readers Ok, now that were on the same page, heres what I want you to know.
