New car finishes should not be subjected to a rubbing compound first. Use a rubbing compound only after less aggressive products have been tested first, like Scratch Repair and Renew. How do I repair deep scratches? Use Turtle Wax Scratch Repair and Renew.
The abrasive qualities of the compound work to restore the smoothness restore the layer. You can use the rubbing compound on the light scratches but for the deep scratches, you need to use the sandpapers.
Deal With Scratches Squeeze a small amount of toothpaste (any brand will work, but avoid using gel-based toothpastes) onto your finger. Then, using your finger, gently rub the toothpaste onto the scratch in circular motions for one to two minutes. This will slowly and gently buff away the plexiglass scratch.
Baking soda is a gentle mineral abrasive that will buff away scratches on plastic. Combine two parts baking soda to one part water to create a thick paste. Dip a cotton cloth in the paste and apply it to the scratched area. Work in a circular motion to buff away the scratch.
Scratch and Swirl Remover products, in general, have similar performance characteristics to rubbing and polishing compounds. Scratch and Swirl Removers, however, are formulated, and product instructions are tailored, for repairing light overall finish blemishes or localized repair.
To determine if you can do the job at home, run a fingernail very gently across the area with the scratch. If your nail passes over the scratch without any real resistance, you can fix the issue at home. If your fingernail catches inside the scratch, it may be too deep to repair without professional help.
If oxidation and dull finish is the focus; then Rubbing and Polishing Compounds are the best to use. If the focus is scratch repair or removal of finish blemishes, then the focus should be Scratch Repair or Scratch and Swirl removing products.
